Depending on the type of hot water cylinder you have in your home, there may be a number of different issues causing this problem.
For both electric & gas hot water systems, you may have an electricity issue. Perhaps your circuit breaker has blown and the circuit has tripped. There might be an issue with either the element or the thermostat - perhaps the element at the bottom of the cylinder has blown or is malfunctioning so it no longer heats the water, or the thermostat no longer works. On all mains pressure cylinders there is a tempering valve, so if the tempering valve is malfunctioning or is not working, it will only let the cold water through.
Treatment
There may be simple things you can do yourself – like check your power source and your gas supply. Have a look at your switchboard and see if there is a switch that has moved to the down position.

If you see water leaking from your cylinder or its overflow pipe, we need to address the issue straight away. There are a few things you can do.

The main cause of a hot water cylinder tank leak is a crack or default in the inner tank. All hot water cylinders, electric and gas, are composed of three things – a steel outer casing, thermal insulation, and then an inner copper, steel, or stainless steel tank.
If the inner tank is cracked or damaged (either due to age or from wear and tear if it has been moved), water may leak from it. This is the most common cause of a water tank leak.e might be blocked, not allowing the water to come through.
Treatment
Unfortunately an inner tank cannot be repaired; it will need to be replaced. This is often an urgent issue that needs to be addressed due to the potential water damage a leak may cause, or the cost of unnecessary water use.
